Senate Res. 65 Support Israel in Iran Alert - 3/3/13

Update (5/22): Senate Resolution 65 passed the Senate by a vote of 99-0. 

  • S. Res. 65, a key resolution pushed at 2013 AIPAC conference, was introduced 2/28/13
  • it calls for U.S. military support for Israel if Israel "is compelled" to attack Iran (resolution is nonbinding)
  • it reaffirms harsh sanctions on Iran

"US-Israel Strategic Partnership 2013" Alert - 3/3/13

Update (9/28/13): The Senate bill remains in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and the House bill remains in the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security. 

  • bills S. 462 (Senate) and H.R. 938 (House) were introduced in early March 2013, each titled "The United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2013"   
  • AIPAC lobbied Congress for both bills at its 2013 conference
  • would give Israel the unique designation of "major strategic partner" of the U.S.
  • would allow Israel to enter the US visa waiver program with limited reciprocity due to a special security exemption, unlike all 37 other countries currently in the program; Israel would be allowed to continue to discriminate against U.S. citizens who criticize Israeli policies or who are of Arabic/Muslim heritage
  • would tie Israel and U.S. more closely together in homeland security, missile defense, military technology, and other areas
